Sheerness man who failed to get ticket to Queenborough ejected from Southeastern train

A train passenger who was found without a ticket abused railway staff and had to be ejected from the carriage when he refused to give his details or pay the fare.

Darren Cattell had been out drinking the night before and was going home when he boarded a Southeastern train heading towards Queenborough without a ticket.

He had lost his cash card the night before and got on the train without purchasing a valid ticket.

Bricklayer Cattell then refused to provide his details to enforcement staff who were checking tickets on board.

At this point the 40-year-old became aggressive towards the trio of male officers and threatened them.

They had to eject him from the train at Swale Railway Station. On the platform he continued to be abusive and made threats. He even lunged towards one officer and had to be restrained. Cattell was then let go when the train left the station.

He was later identified and arrested.

Cattell, of High Street, Sheerness, was charged with three counts of threatening behaviour and admitted the offences when he appeared before magistrates in Medway on April 5.

The court heard the incidents took place on September 6 last year.

Debbie Jones prosecuting said: "The enforcement officers were conducting ticket checks and he refused to provide details as he didn't have a ticket.

"He made abusive threats to them and was put on the platform where he made more threats."

Ms Jones said the enforcement officers had given victim impact statements, with one saying he was now wary of people and had never come across someone as aggressive at Cattell. He said it had taken three of them to restrain him.

Another was so affected, he took three months off work because of the incident and the third said he was now apprehensive when he challenged people.

The court was told Cattell had another conviction for a public order offence, an assault on police charge, which he had previously been given a community order for.

Karley Styles, defending, told magistrates her client had an on-off issue with alcohol and sometimes binge drinks and this offence was linked to that.

She added: "It was the morning after the night before and he missed the last train home and had lost his bank card.

"He got on the train hoping not to get caught. They were verbal threats. He was upset he had to get off and they dragged him off the train and pinned him against the fence and only let him go after the train left.

"He had to walk from Swale to Queenborough and was upset. He regrets it and has been on the train again with no issue.

"He's abstained [from alcohol] a lot since last in court, but blows out sometimes."

Magistrates said they were making a compensation order only. Cattell has to pay each of the enforcement officers £100 compensation.

Chairman of the bench Mark Tucker said: "We will put it [his behaviour] down to a blip.

"There will be nothing else, no other punishment."
