Some of the country’s best players descended on Gillingham’s Black Lion Centre at the weekend for the second annual Butterfly Table Tennis Grand Prix.

More than 200 competitors contested 15 different titles during the two-day event. Saturday’s action involved banded competition in the men's and women’s side of the draw. Sunday saw the staging of the open events the under-21s, veterans and restricted competitions.

Bo Huang Chen took the men’s open crown in a scintillating all-Chinese final against Wang Zheng.

Shuying Xu made it a Chinese double, seeing off England international Karina Lefevre in the women’s open final.

The tournament also featured local players representing the Howard and Chatham Table Tennis Clubs. Among them, Chris Bartram, the Howard TTC British League player who won the veterans’ title.

Other notable locals included Chris Martin, who reached the semi-finals in the mixed restricted competition and Ian Gordon, who reached the semi-finals of the men’s band three competition and the quarter-finals of the men’s band four and veterans’ events.

Medway’s youngsters were also in action, including Ross Wilson, who reached the semi-finals of the men’s band five event, and Phil Thomas, who reached the quarter-final of the band six event.
