Medway Test scores for grammar school entry do not add up

Hundreds of children and parents have been left confused after discovering their scores for the Medway Test do not add up.

The results were emailed or posted on Friday, with Year 6 pupils needing to score 513 to pass and go on to grammar school.

But many parents have taken to social media in confusion as their child’s overall score does not match the total of the individual scores.

A Medway Council spokesman said: “We will be looking into this first thing tomorrow morning and will contact parents accordingly. Parents who would like to speak to the school admissions team can call 01634 331110 from 12 noon tomorrow.”

To calculate the overall score, the maths and creative writing score should be doubled then added to the verbal reasoning score.

But it appears that in many cases the mark for verbal reasoning and creative writing is identical.

Deborah Martin from Rainham Tuition Centre said: “My advice is to email Medway Council and alert them of the problem and then follow up with a phone call on Monday morning.”

It appears that everybody below the pass mark has a discrepancy whereas the sums are correct for those who passed.

Education advisor Peter Read said: “I now have details of 20 children and rising rapidly whose total score is different from the sum of the parts and so don’t know which, if either, to believe.

“It is clear that in all cases I have seen the results have the same score for both Verbal Reasoning and Extended Writing.

“It is therefore probable that one of these two scores has been copied from the other on the results spreadsheet instead of the correct answer, and no one in Medway Admissions Department has bothered to check these critical calculations

“If, and I repeat if, this is correct then the total at the top of the Decision Letter can be regarded as correct, and one of the tests has the wrong score although at this time I don’t know which.

“Most importantly, highly distressed families need to learn the correct outcomes as soon as possible.”

More than 3,000 children sat the Medway Test at the beginning of September with 1,999 Medway children sitting the exam and 1,065 from outside the authority.

A total of 23% will be selected for Medway grammar schools with another 2% chosen on appeal. Last year, 1,126 children passed the test.
