A BURGLAR who was involved in a claw hammer attack on a 70-year-old man has been jailed for five years.

Joseph Wohlman, 31, of Melville Road, Maidstone, and another man were burgling a house when a security light disturbed the homeowner.

When the victim went outside he was dragged into the house by the two men and assaulted. He was hit on the forearm with the claw hammer, forced to the ground and then tied up.

They took money, cigarettes, a leaf-blower, and his car, which was recovered a mile away.

After the attackers searched his home, the man was locked in his bathroom before he managed to free himself and call the police.

Wohlman admitted aggravated burglary and was sentenced to five years in prison at Croydon Crown Court. A charge of taking a motor vehicle without consent will remain on file.

After the incident, which took place in St Paul's Cray last December, police found DNA at the home which linked Wohlman to the attack and he was arrested on January 10.
