Swansea City 1 - 2 Gillingham

GILLINGHAM finally secured their first away win of the season after a thriller at Swansea.

Former League 1 leaders Swansea were unable to cope with Gillingham's battling effort, despite the visitors being reduced to ten men, with Michael Flynn being sent-off for a second booking on 69 minutes.

Darren Byfield got the Gills off to a flier on 18 minutes, on the day the club refused an offer for the striker from League 1 rivals Southend, with his seventh goal of the season.

The Gills made life hard for themselves with Flynn collecting two bookings in a minute during the second half, reducing them to 10 men.

Despite this, however, they doubled the lead moments later when Neil Harris smashed the ball home, to give Gillingham a great chance of earning a first three points of the season.

Jason Brown's first real test came six minutes from time, as he blocked Rory Fallon's shot, during a nervous period when the home side went searching for a way back in.

The Gills keeper could do nothing with the penalty, which was netted by Andy Robinson, following a foul on Leon Knight by Leon Johnson.

Swansea were unable to break through a second time and the Gills hung on to claim a well-deserved victory.

Gillingham: Brown, Clohessy, Jackman, Cox, Johnson, Black (Grant 80), Spiller, Flynn, Crofts, Byfield, Harris (Pouton 72).
Subs Not Used: Crichton, Hope, Rose.
Attendance: 14,357.
