VOLUNTEERING is seen as an opportunity for people to give something back to society.

But according to Leyland Ridings, the Kent Volunteers Advisory Group chairman, a lot of people discover new directions in life through their involvement.

Cllr Ridings said: "There are huge numbers of people in the county who quite simply wouldn't be in their current careers but for volunteering.

"Voluntary work is a brilliant way to try out new things, learn new skills, find out your strengths and weaknesses, and what you're good at.

"Quite a few young people think they're heading for one career and, after voluntary work, end up somewhere quite different."

Kent County Council leader Paul Carter said: "The route to employment isn't always easy. Voluntary work as a planned part of your career path can make all the difference."
