A man has been arrested today after a woman was sexually assaulted on a train.

The 30-year-old, from Sittingbourne, was held after British Transport Police made an appeal for information.

Detectives arrested the man on suspicion of suspicion of sexual assault after he came forward.

He has now been bailed, pending further inquiries, until Thursday, September 20.

The sexual assault happened on a train between Sittingbourne and Rainham at around 8pm on Wednesday, May 3.

After trying to strike up a conversation with the victim, a 46-year-old woman from Longfield, a man attempted to kiss her before touching her indecently. He then left the train at Rainham.

The victim continued on the train to Longfield before reporting the incident to staff, who alerted police.

DC Bob Gee, who investigated the assault, said: "Following our appeal in local media I'd like to thank the public for their overwhelming response.

"We received a lot of vital information, which greatly assisted our investigation, and have now arrested a man in connection with the incident."
