The 42-year-old was airlifted to King's College Hospital, London, following the incident in Dover Road yesterday.

Police were called to a flat at 4.50pm after reports that a man had been stabbed in the stomach.

He was taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable and not life-threatening.

In another flat in the building, a 40-year-old man was found with minor cuts to his back. He was treated for his injuries at hospital and was discharged later that evening.

Acting Det Insp Shaun Creed said: "We are still trying to establish a motive for the two assaults but don't believe at this stage it was a random attack.

"We have carried out house-to-house inquiries and are looking at CCTV footage. There are also many forensic lines of inquiry to be looked at."

Police are appealing for information about two men. Both are white, aged between 17 and 25.

One had short brown hair and was of a medium build and about 5ft 8ins. He was wearing a blue T-shirt with a bloodstain on the front.

The second man was shorter and had black or dark brown hair.

Both men may have taken off their tops before running away from the building.

Police believe a third offender, a white man aged between 30 and 35, may also have been involved.

Acting Det Insp Creed said: "We are appealing to anyone who was in Dover Road and may have seen the offenders either arriving at or leaving the flats to contact us."
