Giant art walkway to open in Maidstone

A walk around Maidstone will soon be a slightly more cultural experience.

Three large-scale paintings, by international artist Susan Haire, and a seven-part musical composition, by Stephen Dydo, have been brought together for an exhibition called Ten thousand currents.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a 30-yard walk, looking at art while enjoying music featuring recorded instruments, computer-synthesized sounds, and synthesized voices based on two melodies by Chinese court musicians dating back 1,500 years ago.

The works go on display for six months from February 19 at the Maidstone House Gateway in King Street.

Depending on the listener’s position, variations may be heard as a low, slow-moving chant, a swooping soprano glide form one pitch to another, crystalline lines suspended high above the other sounds, or an electric guitar solo.
