A FORMER High Sheriff of Kent has died, aged 88. Major Ian Calvocoressi was High Sheriff in 1978 and lived at Westerham, near Sevenoaks.

He was instrumental in overseeing the installation of Westerham's statue of Churchill.

Major Calvocoressi had a distinguished war record, serving with the Scots Guards in North Africa, Italy and Burma and was decorated with the Military Cross.

He was married for 60 years to Katherine Kennedy, sister to Sir Ludovic Kennedy, and he is survived by her and their three sons, James, Richard, Andrew and daughter, Iona.
