Family lucky to escape house blaze

FIREFIGHTERS were called from all over Kent to fight a house fire on Tuesday night.

A family was lucky to escape their home in Amherst Road, Rochester, before six crews from Sittingbourne, Headcorn, Maidstone and Tonbridge arrived to tackle the blaze just after 9pm.

Firefighters spent more than four hours fighting the flames and making surrounding areas safe before leaving the scene just before 1.30am.

A spokesperson for Fire and Rescue headquarters said: "When firefighters arrived the first floor was well alight. An upstairs bedroom was also on fire.

"We do not yet know the cause of the fire."
