THE first recipient of the new Spirit of Kent Award is the Duke of Kent.

The award was introduced by Lord Lieutenant Allan Willett to mark conspicuous service to the county and its people.

The Duke was unanimously chosen by a panel of county representatives. He will receive the award after attending the Lieutenancy of Kent’s Civic Service at Rochester on Tuesday.

Local authority mayors, chairmen, and representatives of their charities will attend the service, together with council leaders, chief executives, and representatives from all town and parish councils throughout Kent.

The aim of this, the second Civic Service – the first having been held at Canterbury Cathedral last year – is to celebrate the contribution to Kent life made by civic heads and council representatives during the year, and to give thanks for the work of the charities in the community.

The Spirit of Kent Award will be presented at the most annually on behalf of the people of Kent to someone whose service to the county has been truly outstanding.

Announcing that the Duke is to be the first recipient, the Lord Lieutenant said: "This is not an award made out of courtesy to him because of his title.

"It is made to him in his own right for the wonderful contribution he and his family have made over five decades. He has worked tirelessly, steadfastly and selflessly – always a good friend to our county."
