Two fire engines were sent to the scene and crews extinguished the flames using flexi-packs and beaters.

A witness who was walking by at the time said they spotted it at around 3.30pm today.

“I could hear sirens and smell smoke,” they said. “It is in the top field behind the heritage park and the leisure centre.

“It’s only a small area on fire and hopefully they will get it under control.

“My husband did mention that he could see the smoke from the A2 when he was travelling home.”

No injuries were reported and the cause is not yet known.

A spokesman from the fire service said: “During spells of hot weather, the ground can get very dry and there is a higher risk of a fire starting.

“Members of the public can help to reduce this risk by avoiding having bonfires, disposing of smoking materials responsibly, and by taking extra safety steps if you're having a barbecue.

“Disposable barbecues should be placed on a flat, non-flammable surface, and only throw them away once cold – whether that’s in a bin or at a waste site.”
